Pace vs. speed

Pace expresses effort as time per unit distance (minutes per km or mile) — the standard way runners talk about training and race effort. Speed is the inverse, expressed as distance per unit time (km/h or mph) — more common in cycling. This calculator converts freely between the two, and can also project a finish time for a target distance once you know your pace.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use this to plan a race? Enter your goal distance and a target pace (from recent training runs) to see your estimated finish time — or enter a target finish time to find the pace per km/mile you'd need to hold.

Why does my pace feel different on a treadmill vs. outdoors? Treadmill pace and outdoor pace often feel different due to the lack of wind resistance and the belt assisting leg turnover — many runners find treadmill pace feels easier than the equivalent outdoor pace.

Should I aim for even pacing across a whole race? Even or slightly negative splits (running the second half slightly faster) are generally considered a more effective race strategy than starting fast and slowing down, since starting too fast burns glycogen reserves quickly.
