What is a MET?

A MET (metabolic equivalent of task) measures how many times more energy an activity uses compared to sitting quietly — sitting is 1 MET, while running at 6 mph is around 10 METs. Calories burned = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours), which is why the same activity burns more calories for a heavier person and why more intense activities have higher MET values.

Why does body weight affect calories burned so much? Moving a heavier body requires more energy for the same activity, so MET-based formulas scale calorie burn directly with body weight — a 90 kg person burns noticeably more than a 60 kg person doing the identical activity for the same time.

Are MET values exact for everyone? No — they're population averages from research studies and don't account for individual fitness level, technique, terrain, or exact intensity, so treat the result as a reasonable estimate rather than a precise measurement.

Does this include "afterburn" (extra calories burned after exercise)? No — this estimates calories burned during the activity itself. High-intensity exercise can elevate metabolism for a period afterward, which isn't captured in a simple MET calculation.
