Army Body Fat Calculator

Based on the Army Body Fat Assessment for the Army Body Composition Program (June 12, 2023): one-site abdominal circumference at the belly button plus weight. Average at least three tape readings and round to the nearest 0.5 inch and nearest pound before entering.

Official charts and worksheets: see implementing guidance (e.g. ALARACT 046/2023 PDF) and the Army ABCP site.

Why the Army uses this specific formula

The one-site tape method estimates body fat from weight and abdominal circumference alone (using a different regression equation for men and women), which makes it fast and practical for mass unit-level testing compared to multi-site skinfold or hydrostatic methods. It trades some individual accuracy for consistency and ease of administration across a large population.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator ask for three measurements averaged together? Abdominal circumference can vary slightly depending on breathing and tape tension — averaging three readings (as official Army procedure requires) reduces measurement error before it's rounded to the nearest 0.5 inch.

Does passing or failing here mean I officially pass or fail the ABCP? No — this is an educational estimate for personal reference only. Official body composition determinations must follow current command procedures with a qualified measurer, not a self-administered online tool.

Why do the maximum allowable percentages increase with age? The standards reflect that body composition naturally shifts somewhat with age even among fit individuals, so the allowable thresholds are age-banded rather than a single fixed number for all soldiers.
