Why so many different formulas?

Devine, Hamwi, Robinson, and Miller are all decades-old regression formulas originally developed to estimate a "reference" weight for medical drug dosing, not necessarily an aesthetic or fitness target — they typically agree reasonably closely but were derived from different study populations, which is why each gives a slightly different number.
