How the volume and weight are estimated
Volume = area × depth, converted to cubic yards (the standard unit gravel is usually sold and delivered in). Weight is then estimated by multiplying volume by the gravel type's density (pounds per cubic foot), since different materials — river rock, crushed stone, granite chips — pack to different densities for the same volume.

Why does gravel type affect the amount I need to order? Denser materials weigh more per cubic foot, so if you're ordering gravel by weight (tons) rather than volume, the same coverage area and depth will require a different tonnage depending on which material you choose.
How deep should my gravel layer be? Typical depths are 2–3 inches for a decorative top layer or walking path, and 4–6 inches or more as a compacted base layer under a driveway or patio — check your specific project's requirements.
Should I order extra to account for settling? Many contractors add 10% or so beyond the calculated volume, since gravel compacts somewhat after spreading and with foot or vehicle traffic over time.
